Did you collect and play with Breyer toy horses when you were a child, or even as an adult? Bring your Breyer horse(s) to the program for a special Show-and-Tell!

Susan Friedland, author of Marguerite, Misty and Me: a Horse Lover's Hunt for the Hidden History of Marguerite Henry and her Chincoteague Pony, never grew out of that horse phase. In 2018 after re-reading Misty of Chincoteague for the first time as an adult, Susan was inspired to hunt for the backstory of her favorite horse book author and set off on an epic adventure which began at the Gail Borden Library--the library where Marguerite Henry researched her iconic books like Misty, Brighty of the Grand Canyon and King of the Wind, the 1949 Newbery Medal winner. Susan tracked down friends of Marguerite from her days riding and writing in Wayne, explored the Chincoteague Pony subculture during Pony Penning Week (with a front row kayak seat for the famous pony swim) and uncovered Marguerite's unpublished manuscripts held in an underground cavern in Minnesota.

In addition to Susan’s four horse-themed nonfiction books, she has been actively blogging on her award-winning equestrian lifestyle blog, saddleseekshorse.com since 2013. Susan’s writing has been featured in various horse magazines from Horse Illustrated to Sidelines, and she is a host of the Horse Illustrated Barn Banter Podcast and has been a speaker at Equitana, American Horse Publications conferences, the International Museum of the Horse and the Museum of Chincoteague Island. When Susan's not traveling on equestrian adventures, she's trotting around on her ex-racehorse, Tiz A Knight in nearby Bull Valley, Illinois.
